The title Messiah, or anointed one, is used many times in the Bible to refer to specific people, including prophets (Psalms 105:15), priests (Leviticus 4:3), and kings (II Samuel 23:1). The Messiah also refers to the Saviour of Israel.

In the Old Testament, there was a lot of uncertainty as to how the Saviour of Israel would come. An example of this is the name "Shiloh", whose coming would mark the end of the reign of Judah. Shiloh has a vague meaning, which only indicates that one will come to whom the kingship belongs.

In the New Testament, the Greek word for Messiah is Christ.

Jesus became the Christ at his baptism

when the Holy Spirit come upon Him at the baptism of John, and He become the Anointed Messiah... Now, remember, He was the Son of God when He was borned. He was God's virgin-born Son. But when He become Messiah, that's when the Holy Spirit come on Him, 'cause the "Messiah" means the "anointed one." See? And He was the Anointed One when the Holy Spirit came on Him.

The sign of the Messiah: revealing the heart

’’The woman at the well recognized her day, by the sign of the Messiah. She was in a bad shape. She didn't want to fool with them old churches, the way they were doing. They were living every way, and, things they were doing, she didn't believe in that stuff. But she knowed there would come One one day. The poor little fellow up there, on the way to the well; she found that Thing that she was looking for, when He begin to reveal to her the secret of her heart, told her the sin that she was living in.
’’She said, "Sir, I perceive that You're a Prophet." Now, they hadn't had one for four hundred years. Said, "I perceive that You're a Prophet. And I know that when the Messiah cometh He'll do these things."
    ’’He said, "I am He."
’’She recognized. There was no more question, "How can You prove it?" It was already proved. "When Messiah cometh, this is what He'll do."

’’And the Bible said, in Hebrews 4, that "The Word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword, a Discerner of the thoughts of the heart." Is that right? And that's what Jesus did to prove He was the anointed Word, Messiah. Oh, my! Don't you see that? What is Messiah? The anointed One. The anointed what? The anointed Word!

    Identifying the Messiah

What type of person do you think those Greeks were looking for? Were they looking for a rabbi with His robes on and a turban hat? …So maybe they wanted to see His stature, maybe how high He was, how large a shoulders that He would have, or the certain fashion He--He wore His hair, or something. Then any man could impersonate that. But they wanted to see the anointed One.
