Melchizedek (mel-kizʹuh-dek; Heb., ‘king of righteousness’), the king of Salem (Jerusalem) and priest of God Most High who blesses Abraham as the latter returns from battle (Gen. 14:17-20). In Ps. 110:4, the incident is recalled, as God addresses the Hebrew king as ‘priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.’

In later literature, Melchizedek is regarded as an ideal priest-king and, in the Dead Sea Scrolls, as a heavenly judge.

In the Letter to the Hebrews, Melchizedek is a supernatural figure whose miraculous origin and indestructible life foreshadow the eternity of the Son of God (Heb. 5:6, 10; 6:20-7:22).[1]

GENESIS 14 18: And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he [was] the priest of the most high God.

19: And he blessed him, and said, Blessed [be] Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

20: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

21: And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

22: And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

23: That I will not [take] from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that [is] thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

24: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

GENESIS 18 1: And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

2: And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw [them], he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3: And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

4: Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

5: And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.

9: And they said unto him, Where [is] Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.

10: And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard [it] in the tent door, which [was] behind him.

11: Now Abraham and Sarah [were] old [and] well stricken in age; [and] it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

12: Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

13: And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

14: Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

15: Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

22: And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

23: And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

32: And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy [it] for ten's sake.

33: And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

14: Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

15: And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16: For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation [is] to them an end of all strife.

17: Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath:

18: That by two immutable things, in which [it was] impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19: Which [hope] we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

20: Whither the forerunner is for us entered, [even] Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 7 1: For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

2: To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

3: Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Hebrews 7 Continued 4: Now consider how great this man [was], unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

5: And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

6: But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

7: And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

8: And here men that die receive tithes; but there he [receiveth them], of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

9: And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

10: For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

11: If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need [was there] that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

Hebrews 7 Continued 15: And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16: Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

17: For he testifieth, Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

18: For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

19: For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope [did]; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

20: And inasmuch as not without an oath [he was made priest]:

21: (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

22: By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

23: And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

24: But this [man], because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

25: Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

26: For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

27: Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

28: For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, [maketh] the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

Hebrews 13 8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Revelation 19 16: And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
