Adonai means "my Lord", and is from the root word "Adon" (Hebrew: a ruler, one with power and authority). In the Old Testament, Adon is used in reference to earthly kings, rulers, and masters, as well as in reference to God. In modern Hebrew, Adon is used similarly to "Mr." in English, or "senor" in Spanish.
