The Word of God created the world, and is the first physical manifestation of God that we can understand. The Word of God also spoke with Adam in the garden of Eden, to Moses out of a burning bush, to John the Baptist when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, and to the apostle Paul as a great shining light. The Word of God is both the promise of God and the manifestation of God.
Jesus said that he came from God, and would go back to God (John 13:3). The meaning of this is revealed in the book of Acts, when the Pillar of Fire says: "I am Jesus" (Acts 9:3-6). Jesus was the Word that had come from God, and descended into Adam's race to become the Son of God and Son of Man. After his resurrection, Jesus returned to Heaven, to the glory that he had with the Father before the world was.
O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD. (Jeremiah 22:29)
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. (John 15:3)

The Word in the Old Testament
In the Old Testament, the Word of the Lord was the promise of God received either directly from God (in the case of Abraham, Moses, Elisha, and the Prophets), or through the prophets (as in the case of the majority of the children of Israel). In essence, the whole Bible is the word of the LORD.
The "word of the Lord" and the "word of God" are mentioned over 300 times in the Old Testament. Some key scriptures include:
