In the Old Testament, the prophet Job was rebuked by the LORD for maintaining his own righteousness when God took his posessions and weath.  In the New Testament, a rich young ruler told [[Jesus]] that he had kept all of the commandments from his youth;  however, he was troubled when Jesus asked him to sell all his posessions and follow Jesus.  This ruler did not understand that righteousness is only found in following Jesus, the Word.  William Branham taught that Jesus referred to this same man in the parable of the rich man calling to Abraham from hell, asking for Lazarus to bring some relief from his torment, and warning to his family.

==Commentary by William Branham==
===Job's righteousness was in Christ===
:''But a man had sinned, and there was no way for him to ever rise in the Presence of his Maker. And so, in this condition, he was permitted by God to see the Just One coming. A Man Who could put His hands on a sinful man and a holy God, and bridge the way, the Son of God. Then when the Spirit was on the prophet, he cried out, "I know my Redeemer liveth, and at the last days He'll stand upon the earth, and though after my skin worms destroys my body, yet in my flesh shall I see God for myself. Mine eyes shall behold, and not another."''
::Sermon: I Am the resurrection and life, Campbellsville, Ky, Nov 18, 1963
===The righteous are led by God===
:''Nothing in the world can go wrong as long as you're in God. "The footsteps of the righteous is ordered of the Lord."
:''And then they sent again for Jesus. And He seemingly ignored their call and just went right on. After four days passed, He said, "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth. And for your sake I'm glad I wasn't there." For if He'd have been there, they'd have been trying to get Him to do something that wasn't the will of God.
::Sermon: Then Jesus Came, Jeffersonville, IN, April 7, 1957
===Sin and righteousness===
:''Now, a righteous man is not a sinless man. For you notice he said, "Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are." He had his ups-and-downs and his differences. And the Scripture of his life proves that he had his ups-and-downs like we do. And he had his times of wondering and his times that his temper got away from him, and he had a lot of things, that went wrong. But he was still a righteous man, because he confessed his unworthiness and believed in God. So that's what made him righteous.
::Sermon: God's provided way, West Palm Beach, FL, Dec 1, 1953
===The Holy Spirit imputes righteousness===
:''Now, what is the--what is the circumcision today? Is the Holy Spirit. God circumcises our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Where was done by the flesh with hands in the days gone by, but it's done by the Holy Spirit now. When we believe correctly on the Lord Jesus Christ, God gives the Holy Ghost to us to confirm it, that our faith has been reckoned before Him, and imputed to us for righteousness. Without the Holy Spirit, He's never recognized it yet.''
::Sermon: I will restore, Des Moines, IA, June 20, 1960
===The absence of the righteous today===
:''Many times, that, the very thing that this Bible calls immoral, the world today calls virtue. When you take our--our young girls, and strip their clothes off of them, and put them out there with little shorts on, in slacks and things, and walk them down the street, and they think that's virtuous that the girl can display her female flesh. When, the Bible says it's sin, horrible! But the world calls it virtue. See, they're making the Commandments of God... And the church says nothing about it. It's time that somebody rose in the name of righteousness, in the Name of Jesus Christ, and put a stamp on this, 'cause sometime we're going to answer for it at the Day of the Judgment.''
::Sermon: The flashing red light of the sign of His coming. Jeffersonville, IN, June 23, 1963
