Lamb

From BelieveTheSign

This article is one in a series of studies on animals that are used as metaphors for Jesus Christ - you are currently on the topic that is in bold:

A lamb is a kosher animal known for its wool, its passive nature, and its ability to follow. The lamb and the ram were common sacrifice animals in the Old Testament. Jehovah Jireh provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice (instead of his son Isaac), and Moses told the Hebrews in Egypt to slay a lamb, cover their doorposts with its blood, and eat every part of the lamb before sunrise - or every firstborn would face the Angel of Death.

Isaiah prophecied that the Messiah would be led as a "lamb to the slaughter", and John the Baptist called Jesus the "Lamb of God".

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. (John 1:29-30)

And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. (Revelation 13:8)

Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Moreover the prince shall not take of the people's inheritance by oppression, to thrust them out of their possession; but he shall give his sons inheritance out of his own possession: that my people be not scattered every man from his possession.
